The 60-Day Identity Shift: Why Most People Quit Before It Begins

Most people quit at day six. The identity shift begins at day sixty.
Are you up for the 60-day identity shift?
I’ve always wanted to learn to speak Spanish.
I’d get that hit of motivation and dopamine just imagining how cool it would be to talk to someone in an exotic language like Spanish.
So in 2017, I made up my mind that I was going to do it.
I watched a ton of YouTube videos, read more blog posts than you can imagine,
downloaded Duolingo and set it up to the max, and then kept reminders to do this everyday.
Things were great for the first few days.
I showed up, read, listened, learned.
On Day 5, I had an important task at work pop-up and so I had to skip that day.
The work overflowed into Day 6, and so I decided I was going to do “Spanish overtime” on Day 7.
But Day 7 was the weekend and after a long week, of course, I had to take a break.
And so I did.
And that’s the last time I spent time learning Spanish.
Most people quit on their goals by day six.
It’s something you see with new years resolutions too.
Motivation fades. Work priorities. Life kicks in. Excuses win.
But the real transformation doesn’t even start until day sixty.
That’s when the system starts running you instead of you running the system.
Initially, discipline requires thought and effort.
But very soon, Discipline stops feeling like effort once it becomes identity.
Discipline and identity shifts are all great,
but here’s the secret no one talks about - Rewards matter.
After every 60-day sprint, I celebrate with something that feels earned, not bought.
A Padel racquet. A short trip. Dinner at my favorite spot.
Something that tells my brain, “This loop is worth repeating.”
So here’s your mini worksheet for this week:
Pick one 60-day goal. Something clear, tangible and in your control.
Define your focus times for the goal and block these spots out on your calendar.
Choose one reward that feels earned, if you achieve said goal.
Ensure that you show up when it’s those calendar times.
If you struggle with showing up, remind yourself why you’re doing this, and also the reward you’re going to get at the end of the 60 days 🙂
Repeat that cycle twice, and your identity will start to shift automatically.
PS: I go deeper into this concept in my new video “Why It’s Easier Than Ever to Stand Out (and Thrive).”
